1. Chas Tenenbaum. Chas is one of the three child-genius siblings in the film The Royal Tenenbaums. He's the least well-adjusted and the quietest of the three, and every time I watch the film (which has been quite a few times; it's one of my all-time favorites) he breaks my heart just a little more. So ascerbic and frightened and hiding so much. Oh, my dear sweet boy.

2. Caspian the Tenth--Prince Caspian of the Chronicles of Narnia. I didn't much like Caspian when I read the books as a child, and I can't for the life of me remember why, but I enjoyed him much more reading them as an adult--we see what a frightened boy he is, and how bravely he leads despite that, and how flawed he is despite how brave he seems. Wonderful character.

3. Holden Caulfield. (Last names count, right?) I recently reread Catcher in the Rye and though it didn't quite measure up to the pedestal on which I placed it when I was fifteen or so, I can certainly see how it--and Holden in particular--had a great influence on my character as a young adult. Cynical? Check. Profane? Double check. As Salinger said: not just strongly attracted to beauty but, almost, hopelessly impaled on it. Yes. I've grown since then, but, yes.

4. Anton Chigurh, from the film No Country for Old Men. Quite possibly the best movie villain of all time. The badass to top all badasses. Played to brilliant psychopathic perfection by Javier Bardem. Friendo.
