You can find a complete list of open characters here. If you've considered joining in the past or you've never RP'd but would like a fun place to try it out, give us a look! Our cast is supportive and helpful, and many of them were brand new to playing when they joined.
Percy Weasley: Still living at the Burrow and working as a Junior Undersecretary for Kingsley with Andromeda as his direct supervisor (both of whom are cast). He ended a brief relationship with Hestia Jones a couple of months ago, and he's mostly been working hard and slipping back into his old ways. There is currently a Weasley plot happening, so there's lots of stuff for Percy to do if he is recast.
Penelope Clearwater: She's working in research at the Ministry, and she's just 'hired' Hermione to try to track down her family, who have been missing since the war. She works a lot, but she also has a good group of friends (Angelina, Alicia, etc) around for when she's not working.
Lucius Malfoy: He is on probation and has limits imposed by the Ministry. His wife and son are both cast, and they'd both love to see him around. He has been planning to open a shop in Diagon for many months but kept running into problems with suppliers and Ministry red tape, so it hasn't opened yet. We would all LOVE to have an active Lucius. If you're tempted, I'll give you puppy dog eyes myself!
Ernie Macmillan: Ernie is in Auror training with Harry, Ron & Michael Corner. He lives in a house with Hannah and Zach (both cast), and he dated Eloise Midgen briefly months ago.
We also have others open like Augusta Longbottom, Cormac McLaggen, Morag Macdougal, Molly Weasley, Aberforth Dumbledore, and Stubby Boardman. All of these characters have in-game interaction and friends around for playing, so there's no worries about not being able to be active.

road_ahead has been going since mid-October 2007, and it's active and wonderful. In-game, there are various things options for interactions. There are some plots coming up that are going to be fun, as well as on-going things that people can use for playing and development. Dolores Umbridge is around being crazy and trouble-causing. There is currently a need for discussion regarding squibs and their place in the magical community, which could potentially lead to soul searching on behalf of magical characters raised to think negatively about those without any magic at all. There are also a few things coming up that I can't talk about but that should be fun for the game.
The players are a mixture of new to RP and old pros, which provides a great environment for everyone. The emphasis is on characterization and interaction, so it's a wonderful opportunity to develop a character post-DH in a canon-plausible setting. The game focuses on realism versus crack or simply smut/shipping, which isn't for everyone. The Mods are actively involved, so if you prefer an environment where they aren't, it's not the game for you. The Mods will totally help get you up to speed, as will other players! It's really is an amazing cast, and just a lovely creative environment.
