I just finished reading the most exquisite Neville/Draco fic, and now I'm sending all of you off to read it too. It's raw and gorgeous and features misunderstandings and lack of communication and happy endings and...baking. Definitely one of the best Neville/Draco stories to come out this, or any other year.

Notes: Written for startrekbigbang. Baseball AU in which all the characters are human, and the setting is some nonspecific time between now and 2258. Lots of nods to various baseball movies mashed up with lots of moments from/rearrangements of ST XI. Lots of other nods to things from the Trek canon (of any timeframe/reality) and para-canon, such as character names and backgrounds. Concept is inell's fault.

This evening the lovely alisanne was in town, so we met up for dinner and tea and much chatter of fandom and other topics.  It was quite a nice time. 
Now I must prepare for my weekend adventure in Austin, plus try to make some progress on my art coming due.

Okay, I'm in not too bad of shape with this assignment, I guess, unless I've woefully misinterpreted what it's supposed to do. The instructions were... terse. But my brain is seriously shutting down, so I'm going to quit working on it for tonight and come back in the morning.

CSA this week included: daikon, red radishes, turnips, a few little carrots, garlic, cherry tomatoes, lettuce, arugula, turnip greens (in addition to those on the turnips), dandelion greens, and purple beans. [Still around from previous weeks: cherry tomatoes, radishes, daikon, turnips, acorn squash, butternut squash, beets.] Turnip puree again, probably; cook some of the red radishes for SO; plain steamed beans; lettuce salad. I might turn the other greens into a tart (don't have that recipe online yet). I also have a recipe for shrimp with cherry tomatoes and feta (also not online) and have a pound of frozen shrimp, so maybe that (using last week's tomatoes, which are now about ripe).

Other than that... Taught classes. Got prep done for Monday for both classes. Had a meeting. Dealt with work email. Dictated about 800 words each on two different fics; one for a fest, the other DD. Played some with Juno.

Now waiting for SO to get home. He'd indicated he was going to try to get home early tonight, but that didn't happen; he decided he really needed to work out since he hadn't all week. Okay, fair enough, and I worked on the assignment meantime. But if he doesn't get back soon, we probably can't have our Friday night date since restaurants around here close pretty dang early even on weekends. So we'll see. There are some leftovers if we end up not doing anything tonight.

I just thought you should all like to know that yesterday was a very, very important day for me.

One of the hallmarks of hypo-thyroidism is... puffy fingers or swollen hands. Because of this latest bought of adventure on the Thyroid Seas, I have not been able to wear my wedding band for about three years or so. In fact, I've been wearing my paternal grandmother's ring for about a year now, so that I didn't feel "unmarried." However, yesterday, on a whim, I picked up my wedding band and slipped it on and you can see the result here...



I cannot even begin to tell you how happy I am!! And I'm still wearing it! The Husbandly One congratulated me and said that perhaps the current dosage of thyroid hormone is working for me. I think he may be right! We'll see if the endocrinologist agrees in two weeks!

• I finished the first draft of my long-overdue LLM fic for accioslash, the continuation of Thicker Than Water. Anyone want to beta? It's very very chan and mpreg (knocked-up 11yo Harry ftw).


• 2 out of 3 Mini-Commission spots got claimed, so unless the 3rd goes today, that'll be the only ones I offer for the holiday season.


• I've decided not to do Yuletide this year -- someone got my tiny fandom disqualified (if I'd known anyone would bother, I could have easily defended it, but since it didn't occur to me to check it's now too late), and I just don't have the heart to play after that.


• Which means I only have santas_lap to write this season, and that's it, since I'm also not doing nanowrimo. It hardly feels like the holiday at all!

I so meant to do this before the reveal. Really I did. Better late than never, right?

When I have been stuck on the many things I am writing, I have been reading some at bigbangblackout (yes, there are many fabulous stories there I've yet to read properly), reading some fantastic stuff at hd_career_fair, and have come across a couple of great things at ownficfest. Hmm, maybe there is a pattern here that could tell me why I'm not getting my own writing done.

Anyway, some recs:

Light as Iron, Singed as Pearl by snegurochka_lee, NC-17.

I think this was the first thing I read at this fest and, OMG, what a way to begin. I love this fic. Draco is the owner of an elite BDSM club. Harry is the Ministry's post-war Reconciliation and Reconstruction Commissioner. This means that Draco gets to call Harry Commissioner throughout the fic, which is ridiculously hot. I would characterize the interactions between Harry and Draco as D/s not BDSM, and the exploration of that dynamic is absolutely brilliant—subtle, interesting, and totally sexy. The description of the emotions and needs of both characters is really compelling. The final, scorchingly hot, sex scene explores what D/s means in a non-stereotypical way that I loved so, so much. There is also a fabulous OC named Phoebe, on whom I have a giant crush. I clicked on this not meaning to read something right then, just looking, mmm-hmmm, but once I started, I had NO choice but to finish it.

Go read this, really do. I promise you won't be disappointed.

Small Blessings, by oldenuf2nb, R.

After the war, Harry opens an orphanage with the help of a surprising friend. When he adopts an infant left on his doorstep, he has no idea what fate has in store for him.

This is such a lovely story. The summary tells you what Harry does. Draco is the designer of an elite line of men's lounge wear. This means there are lots of pretty descriptions of him… He had been the playboy of the wizarding world, estranged from his family. He returns to England and has no idea what fate has in store for him, either. This is sweet and schmoopy, but not without substance. The building attraction between Harry and Draco is completely delicious and both characters are believable as more mature, slightly mellowed versions of their teen selves. There are some great OCs in this as well, and a wonderful Pansy.

If you are in the mood for a suck-you-in, romantic story, this is for you.

When the Clocks Stopped, by vaysh11, NC-17

When the clocks stop the past gets its chance to catch up.

This is a creative, fast-paced story. Harry is a member of a Curse Breaker team—lead by Sirius Black! Draco is a renowned Arithmancy expert who has made some important discoveries about time. I can't do the complexity and creativity of the plot justice. It is exciting and intricate. The physicists and science-and-time-space-continuum-minded people on the flist will have to suspend your disbelief. The author acknowledges that the science is made up. The UST between Harry and Draco is fabulous, as is the get together. An interesting, different kind of a read.

There are others on my list to rec and to read, so more later. The masterlist for this fest is incredible and I don't think you could go wrong by just looking through it and clicking on anything that catches your eye.

Don't forget to leave the authors/artists some love.

p.s. I will be in need of a beta for a 5k fic later this weekend. It is with someone for content now, but I would love someone for a second look and SPAG. Anyone available and willing? I would be so thankful. :)
